New Mexico Health Connections is governed by a diverse board of directors representing experts in New Mexico’s healthcare system, consumer protection, and medicine. Our 2016 Board of Directors includes:
As a Board member of New Mexico Health Connections for the last three years, I have been a part of the exciting planning and growth of NMHC, and in 2015 was elected to serve as Chair of the Board. It is truly an honor to work with a Board and a professional staff who are committed to improving the health of our customers and making health insurance affordable and accessible. As a native New Mexican, I grew up in a family insurance business where customer service was the highest priority. I have been a business owner and saw the difference it made to have healthy employees -- for me and for their families. And I have served in public office where I worked to make sure New Mexicans had access to affordable health insurance. These values – a commitment to improving health, the best customer service, and making health plans accessible and affordable – are reflected in all we do at NMHC.
I have served as a consumer member on the Board of New Mexico Health Connections and currently serve as Vice-Chair. Having served on the NMHC Board for the last two years, I would like to continue to assist in building NMHC into a viable competitive health organization for New Mexico. I believe that all American citizens should have health insurance. Through NMHC, I believe we can create a competitive alternative from the for-profit health insurance industry. I have had the opportunity to be president of a local New Mexico start up bank in Belen. We built MyBank from $7 million to $150 million with 5 branches over 14 years. I am now the owner of Nexus Brewery and Restaurant, where we have created an original brewery/restaurant concept, and it is now a competitive mainstay in the Albuquerque area over the last 4 years. I want to help do the same thing with NMHC. I was born and raised here in Albuquerque, graduated from Highland High School, and obtained a finance degree from NMSU. I love New Mexico and one of my personal goals in starting my business is to improve our community through the creation of better-than-average jobs for New Mexicans.
I am a consumer member on the New Mexico Health Connections Board, where I serve as Treasurer and Chairman of the Finance Committee. I am the primary shareholder and President of Ulrich Consulting Group, LLC and have been a consumer of New Mexico Heath Connections since its inception. I began my career in the investment business in 1984. Throughout my career, I have gained extensive experience in a wide range of financial issues. I have served a wide variety of clientele, including most types of public and private foundations and endowments. I have significant experience working with charitable organizations, helping design well-structured investment portfolios and guidelines based on their specific needs, as well as their individual philosophical views and regulatory requirements. I am very active in the foundation and endowment community as a volunteer board member. I have served as a Public Member of the New Mexico Public Accountancy Board and was a past board member and Chair of the New Mexico Community Foundation. I have also served as a Board member and past chairman of the Laguna Rainbow Corporation, a nonprofit Native American corporation that operates a 58-bed nursing home at Laguna Pueblo.
Barbara McAneny, M.D.
I am a board-certified medical oncologist/hematologist from Albuquerque, NM, and the current Immediate Past Chair of the Board of the American Medical Association, and have been President of New Mexico Medical Society. I have practiced oncology and hematology in New Mexico since 1983. In 1987, I co-founded and am CEO of New Mexico Oncology Hematology Consultants Ltd., and built New Mexico Cancer Center in 2002. The practice provides services in Albuquerque, Gallup, Silver City, and Las Cruces, so I am well aware of the problems of healthcare delivery confronting New Mexico. As a founding Board member for NMHC, I assisted with the original application to CMS to create a not-for-profit insurance entity in New Mexico, now known as NMHC. As a leader in redesign of the delivery of healthcare, I was awarded $19.8M by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation in 2012 to duplicate the oncology medical home I created in my practice into six other practices across the country. A recipient of a New Mexico Woman on the Move award in 2005 and Woman of Influence award in 2009, I have been voted several times by my peers as Albuquerque The Magazine’s “Top Doc” in my specialty.
I believe I bring a unique blend of education and experience to be an effective member of the Board of Directors of New Mexico Health Connections. Paramount in that regard are the following qualifications:
- Owner, operator, and manager of one of the largest independent insurance agencies in New Mexico for 16 years, bringing marketing experience to the position and a thorough understanding of the need for customer service.
- Superintendent of Insurance for four years bringing a complete understanding of the regulatory framework within which an insurance company must operate. Corporate Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico for two years, bringing an understanding of the corporate operation of a large health insurance carrier.
- President and CEO of New Mexico Mutual Casualty Company for five years, bringing a complete understanding of operating and managing a New Mexico based insurance company and the need to work hand in hand with a Board of Directors.
I currently serve on the NMHC Board and am committed to assuring that New Mexico Health Connections fulfills its mission and sticks to its values.
For the last year and a half, I have served as a consumer member on the Board of New Mexico Health Connections, and currently serve as Secretary of the Board. I am the Executive Director of Opera Southwest, Albuquerque’s local, regional opera company. During my tenure, Opera Southwest has been able to develop diverse and innovative community partnerships; among them the administrative services partnership with the chamber music group Chatter. Both Opera Southwest and Chatter have been consistent innovators in the local arts community, and have been able to grow and reach new audiences in a fiscally sound manner, outperforming most national benchmarks. Attention to the financial details of non-profit management has allowed both companies to develop a national and international reputation for high-quality artistic output. I was raised in Albuquerque and hold a degree in voice performance from the University of New Mexico, as well as an MBA from the University of Cincinnati. I am deeply committed to the not-for-profit, co-operative ideal: by the members, for the members. I am particularly interested in improving the healthcare options available to musicians, artists, and other nonprofit and freelance workers in New Mexico – groups not traditionally well-served by health insurance.

I am a native New Mexican. I practice family medicine at Pojoaque Primary Care and am a member of NMHC. I see patients of all ages – from newborns to centenarians. I have served on the Medical Executive Committee and Medical Group Governance Council of Christus St. Vincent Hospital. I have served as Medical Director for the Sangre de Cristo Community Health Partnership, a federal grant to improve healthcare services in northern New Mexico. I have worked at many of the rural health centers in the northern part of the state. I have played an instrumental role in the development of Santa Fe Project Access, a program providing volunteer healthcare services to the uninsured. I also serve on its Board of Directors. I regularly mentor UNM medical students and residents during various stages of their training. I am committed to supporting access to quality healthcare services for all New Mexicans.
As a NMHC consumer, I am honored to be included on the slate of New Mexico Health Connections' Board. I believe strongly in being involved with the areas I feel passionate about, which includes keeping our community healthy. NMHC does a fine job with that, and I want to do my part to continue the excellence that NMHC has already displayed in the community. I am a CPA in private practice, where I provide tax, accounting and consulting services to individuals and closely-held businesses, with a focus on the medical community. While my technical skill set is in the financial sector, I feel that coupling that expertise with a strong strategic vision is critical for success. I serve on various community and professional boards, including Alta Mira of New Mexico, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. In 2011, I was honored as “40 Under Forty” by Albuquerque Business First, and in 2015, I was included as one of CPA Practice Advisor’s 40 Under 40. Outside of the office, I enjoy spending time with my wife, Tina, my son, Levi, and we are looking forward to the arrival of our second son in December.

I believe in NMHC’s mission to keep New Mexicans healthy and happy. As a husband and father from New Mexico, I understand that insurance choices have a huge impact on a family’s physical and financial health; I am a tireless advocate for our insurance needs so that the voices of all New Mexicans are heard. Eleven years as a federal agent taught me to work in large organizations for the public good. My current work in a successful local business requires me to find innovative solutions to real-world problems. As a Board member, I will use my energy and passion for the people of New Mexico to make decisions that are right for today and for future generations. Access to quality healthcare is a fundamental right, but our system does not always achieve it. NMHC is changing this, and I will support that endeavor in every possible way. As a New Mexican, NMHC consumer, and UNM Lobo, service to this state has always been my goal. All New Mexicans should have the affordable insurance options they need, and as a member of the NMHC Board, I will help achieve that.
